The implementation of IoT technology in port management: advantages and challenges    https://prosertek.com/blog/iot-technology-in-port-management/ Mon, 19 Jun 2023 10:46:43 +0000 https://prosertek.com/?p=28517 What is IoT technology?    The acronym IoT stands for Internet Of Things, a concept that we hear more and more frequently in various environments. Specifically, this term refers to “connected things that are equipped with sensors, software, and other technologies that allow them to transmit and receive data”. Examples of devices with this technology include smart light bulbs, a mouse, an autonomous car, or even a washing machine that can be controlled by an APP.       How does it work?    With the information that these devices collect, they help us to automate actions and decisions that may occur in the future. For this to be carried out, a 4-stage process must take place.    Data capture: the sensors that IoT devices have, capture a series of data offered from the environment they are in.    Share the data: through network connections, the devices send the collected data to a public or private cloud system (establishing a device-system-device connection), or to another device (generating a device-device connection) or directly stored on a local hard drive.    Data processing: inside the device, there is software programmed to execute an action based on the collected data (it all depends on the device and the function it is […]

Which are the ports with the highest CO2 emissions?  https://prosertek.com/blog/ports-with-highets-co2-emissions/ Tue, 25 Apr 2023 06:20:37 +0000 https://prosertek.com?p=27115 According to a new study by Transport & Environment (T&E), Rotterdam is the leading European port in terms of traffic, and is associated with almost 14 million tons of CO2 per year. This makes it the largest industrial polluter in Europe. Antwerp, with 7.4 million tons of CO2 (a potent greenhouse gas) per year, and Hamburg, with 4.7 million tons of CO2 per year, are in second and third place, while three of the top 10 most polluting ports are in Spain: Algeciras (4th in the ranking), Barcelona (5th) and Valencia (7th). Spanish ports are responsible for the emission of almost 14 million tons of carbon dioxide. Furthermore, in another report related to port emissions, it names Barcelona, Palma and Venice as the most polluted cities due to the fact that they are popular destinations through which a significant number of cruise ships pass in Europe each year. The data speak for themselves: Barcelona, with 32.8 tons of sulfur oxide; Palma in second place, with 28 tons of these emissions; and in third place Venice, with 27.5 tons.  The study analyzed carbon emissions from ships leaving and entering ports, as well as emissions from port activities such as loading, unloading […]

2021, a record year for North American ports https://prosertek.com/blog/2021-record-year-north-american-ports/ Tue, 29 Mar 2022 07:09:28 +0000 https://prosertek.com?p=26181 2021 marked a turning point for North American ports. The effects of the pandemic on an already creaking supply chain translated into congested ports, a port space saturated with containers and long vessel waiting times. A situation that the experts believe is unlikely to change if nothing is done about it.    Last year, the North American logistics chain was hit by a period of uncertainty from which it has not yet fully recovered. The rise in e-commerce and the sudden increase in post-lockdown consumption threw supplies into tremendous disarray. The positive figures are that the nine leading North American ports (Los Angeles, Long Beach, New York and New Jersey, Georgia, Houston, Seattle and Tacoma, South Carolina, Oakland and Virginia) handled a record 50.5 million containers last year. This translates into a 16% rise in total volume compared to 2020 and 20% compared to 2019.  The downside is that this workload led to bottlenecks, delays and shortages. In other words, the situation shed light on the fact that system allows for faster imports than it can handle.   The keys to port congestion  The problem was caused by the arrival to North American ports of a high volume of containers […]

New maritime and port regulations to improve competitiveness https://prosertek.com/blog/new-maritime-port-regulations-improve-competitiveness/ Thu, 17 Mar 2022 08:27:37 +0000 https://prosertek.com?p=26154 Legislation on the Amendment of the Consolidated Text on State Ports and Merchant Navy Legislation and Maritime Navigation Legislation was adopted on 1 March last by the Council of Ministers.  The new standard is proposed as a coherent update of the two main Spanish Maritime Legislation law with the following objectives: To better fit into the European regulatory framework  To adapt to the new maritime transport needs.  To provide legal security to the Spanish maritime and port sector  To improve the competitiveness of ports and shipping companies. The reform will cover certain existing regulatory gaps and coordinate legislation to avoid any overlaps. For the first time, it contains regulations applicable to autonomous or unmanned vessels, which shall be governed by the general rules of navigation. Another objective of the law is to provide the tools to deal with extraordinary circumstances such as those experienced during the pandemic and to incorporate additional guarantees to prevent any possible issues for Spanish shipping companies in these cases. One of the major developments in the text is the reform of the Vessel and Shipping Enterprises Register, which improves its competitiveness, strengthening the coordinating role of management by the Maritime Administration and improving its communication […]

Electrification, the path towards “zero emissions” ports https://prosertek.com/blog/electrification-path-towards-zero-emissions-ports/ Mon, 28 Feb 2022 11:02:30 +0000 https://prosertek.com?p=26115 Electrification at ports is one of the major challenges for the environmental efficiency of maritime transport, with many projects already underway in Europe. In fact, the Spanish government aims for all ports in the country to be electrified by 2030. We are going to look at how port electrification works, its benefits as well as the challenges it presents. What is port electrification A ship is like a mini city that requires energy to continue operating while docked at a port. This electricity comes from the boats’ auxiliary engines generating this energy. However, this model is shifting towards one where ships are increasingly taking their power from the ports’ electricity grid,  known as “OPS (Onshore Power Supply)” technology. While this method is nothing new, it is now booming due to the new environmental regulations and the Green Ports concept. This allows ships to shut down its engines, resulting in major advantages, reducing not only polluting emissions that affect ports and cities but also noise levels. The system can also become more cost-effective.  Innovation with challenges ahead However, the electrification of the docks involves major investments and challenges. To begin with, we must build an electrical transformation hub that must be […]

The impact of bottlenecks at ports on international transportation https://prosertek.com/blog/impact-bottlenecks-at-ports-international-transportation/ Mon, 31 Jan 2022 11:00:06 +0000 https://prosertek.com?p=26044 Shipping is being affected by a number of disruptions that have been generating bottlenecks at ports since the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic. This congestion has led to freight arriving late as well as increased costs impacting the entire supply chain.  According to a Flexport study, times have practically doubled along the routes between Europe and Asia due to port congestion. A container that used to take between 55 and 60 days to arrive before the pandemic now takes an average of 108 days as of January 2922. This means that 11% of the container capacity is likely to suffer delays in delivery, compared to 2% before the pandemic. And this situation does not appear to be going away any time soon. Consequences for the global economy Even the major central banks are starting to take notice of the serious financial consequences of a tense supply chain for so many months. Its impact on phenomena such as inflation has already led to several calls advocating for state interventionism And the difficulty in transporting goods is hindering financial growth lowering the costs of logistics services and ultimately impacting the prices of final products. This situation seems to be getting worse rather […]

The Ningbo Declaration, a cooperation agreement https://prosertek.com/blog/ningbo-declaration-cooperation-agreement/ Tue, 14 Dec 2021 08:30:03 +0000 https://prosertek.com?p=25951 In a fully globalised logistics panorama, the need for resilient supply chains is vitally important. Digitisation and collaboration are key to the future for the maritime sector, something that has become evident with the signature of the Ningbo Declaration. The Ningbo Declaration is an agreement signed by ports, shipping companies, administrations and other international maritime agents to address challenges, discuss strategies and make changes in ports and the global maritime industry. It is a response to the uncertainty in the world economy, which has led to major tension at ports.  The agreement was reached during the sixth Maritime Silk Road Port International Cooperation Forum, which took place in the Chinese city of Ningbo. Its signatories call for open cooperation with a full approach to digitisation using technologies such as 5G, Big Data, and blockchain to achieve safer and more efficient international shipping. It sets out to do this by creating a universal and open communication platform, to allow all those involved in the sector to share their experiences and thus develop models that may be applicable to the rest. Cooperation to deal with adversity Among the signatories are the world’s leading ports, such as Hunan, Rotterdam, Antwerp, Hamburg, Shanghai, as […]

Container back-up at the Port of Los Angeles https://prosertek.com/blog/container-back-up-port-los-angeles/ Mon, 08 Nov 2021 08:07:54 +0000 https://prosertek.com?p=25906 The container crisis is impacting the global logistics chain. A new issue emerging in the United States is the lack of storage space at ports as well as delays, lack of supply and urgent need for labour. The storage problem is particularly evident at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach in California, which account for about 40% of all U.S. imports. Cargo has been backing up with tens of thousands of containers stuck at ports and a record-breaking 110 ships waiting to dock, the vast majority of which are container carriers.  The problem is the shortage of labour to handle the containers that are backing up at the docks. This means that ships have to wait for increasing amounts of time for space to be freed up, with waiting times of up to three weeks. Exceptional measures The priority involves freeing up space in order to be able to store the containers from the ships that are waiting and thus speed up supply chains. The first step in this direction involved adopting a round-the-clock operation at the ports. This measure has not been very effective due to the lack of lorry drivers to cover so many shifts.  This […]
