These two technologies have transformed the way companies manage, process, and store data, enabling greater efficiency, scalability, and agility in an increasingly competitive business environment. In this article, we will explore in depth what Edge and Cloud Computing is, how they complement each other, and the advantages they offer for the maritime industry.   What are Edge and Cloud Computing?     Edge Computing refers to the practice of processing and analyzing data close to its origin, i.e., on devices or servers closest to the source of data generation. Unlike Cloud Computing, which involves sending data to remote data centers for processing, Edge Computing brings computing and analytics capability directly to the edge of the network, close to the connected devices. This offers several advantages, such as lower latency, faster processing, and the ability to make real-time decisions. Both belong to the fourth industrial revolution along with the internet of things.  Cloud computing, on the other hand, is based on the delivery of computing services over the Internet. Instead of maintaining local servers and equipment, companies can access computing resources, such as […]

Drop in demand for shipping containers https://prosertek.com/blog/drop-in-demand-shipping-containers/ Mon, 05 Dec 2022 08:41:50 +0000 https://prosertek.com?p=26903 A perfect storm is brewing in the container market. The prospect of an economic recession and all that goes with it is leading to a drop in demand for containers that will be accompanied by a slowdown in the shipping sector. This warning was issued by Logistic giant Maersk Air, which predicts that demand for transport and consequent demand for containers is about to fall significantly. “Freight rates have reached their limit and have begun to level off, both because of the decrease in demand as well as the easing of congestion in the supply chain”, the company’s CEO, Soeren Skou, said in a statement. It is worth mentioning that Maersk Air’s figures are considered a barometer of the state of international trade, due to being one of the world’s largest container carriers with around a 17% market share. The company blames the situation on the great uncertainty generated by the war in Ukraine, the energy crisis taking place in Europe and high inflation, all of which pose the threat of an imminent recession. Maersk Air predicts a drop in global container demand of between 2% and 4% for 2022, which is expected to last until 2023.  This fall is […]

New developments towards the decarbonisation of the maritime sector  https://prosertek.com/blog/new-developments-decarbonisation-maritime-sector/ Wed, 26 Oct 2022 07:27:18 +0000 https://prosertek.com?p=26834 The decarbonisation of the maritime sector is already very much underway, and there are many initiatives in place to ensure the sector continues in this green direction. One of the latest news to facilitate the transformation of the sector is the development of a simulator and configurator for ships depending on their economic and environmental efficiency. Known as ECOBUQ, this application will allow the environmental return of reconverting different types of ships to be determined, through industry 4.0 knowledge models. The simulator will therefore evaluate the adaptations needed for the use of clean fuels, as well as the implementation of other measures, allowing the best solution to be found in terms of environmental efficiency and economic costs. The tool therefore provides a vital service at a time when new regulations are coming into force meaning ships had to drastically reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.  The tool allows conclusions to be drawn regarding the implementation of alternative fuels, air lubrication systems, wind-assisted propulsion system, solar panels, waste energy recovery systems, high performance propellers and low resistance paints, to name a few. ECOBOUQ works primarily with the EEXI Energy Efficiency Index applicable to existing ships. This takes account of the current EEXI […]
