Collision in port while manoeuvring, bad weather, Ship-to-Ship operations such as bunkering or errors in the loading and unloading process are some of the factors that can lead to this type of accident.  We know that hydrocarbons are toxic, but what makes a spillage in the sea so dangerous? The problem is that the effect of the waves means that the spillage quickly spreads over the water surface with the danger of the slick reaching coasts and beaches.  Environmental impact An oil spill in the ocean, which goes by the name of oil slick when referring to crude oil, represents many dangers for the environment, causing alterations in the marine ecosystems that they take decades to recover from: at least 15 years are estimated for a small spillage.  A disaster of this type generates 3 major kinds of damage for marine biodiversity:  The film created on the sea surface prevents light from entering, meaning that the seaweed cannot proceed with its photosynthesis.  The crude oil itself kills myriad organisms (fish, birds, etc.), either due to asphyxiation, poisoning or to being coated […]

The importance of port maintenance https://prosertek.com/blog/importance-port-maintenance/ Wed, 27 Oct 2021 08:23:04 +0000 https://prosertek.com?p=25896 In a scenario involving growing global demand, ports around the world are in a permanent race to attract new traffic and routes. Having the right port infrastructure in place can be the best ally to ensure that shipping companies choose one port over another one located in a closer location.  This escalation in port infrastructure investments is nothing new: it has been going on since the 1990s and is intensifying today, but with one particular feature. Ports are discovering the importance of developing and implementing comprehensive conservation plans to conserve efficiency and increase the useful life of port infrastructures. Port conservation is already trending It is important to adopt an integral approach to this maintenance in order for these plans to start right from the initial design phase of the project rather than when the work actually begins. Maintenance-conscious engineering is the best way to minimise subsequent conservation needs, saving on costs and improving competitiveness. Fortunately, many ports are already working with this in mind, including those located in Barcelona and Ferrol, where these conservation plans have been successfully implemented for years already, and have become essential parts of their quality management systems.  The €100 million average invested annually for […]

Fenders for Safe Ship to Ship Operations https://prosertek.com/blog/fenders-ship-to-ship-operations/ Fri, 25 Jun 2021 08:49:30 +0000 https://prosertek.com?p=25740 While ship-to-ship operations are very common in maritime trade, they pose certain risks. Let’s have a look at why STS operations are so much in vogue and how to minimise any of these risks through the use of appropriate fenders. It is firstly important to understand what a ship to ship (STS) operation is. It involves a merchandise exchange operation between two ships that are side by side that can be stopped or even moving. It occurs in the following situations: Between tankers (oil and gas). In large vessels whose draft prevents them from docking in a port or dock to unload there.  STS operations are recommended whenever a port or terminal becomes congested, therefore preventing any bottleneck.  Bunkering operations for the transfer of fuel. This operation is therefore becoming more and more common since new ships are getting bigger and the terminals are often not prepared to receive them. It is also very economical and fast, since it eliminates docking costs as well as the time spent at the port.  One disadvantage is the environmental and fire risk due to the fact that the boats are not moored, increasing the possibilities of spillage during the operation. There is also […]

1st World Marine Aids to Navigation Day https://prosertek.com/blog/world-marine-aids-navigation/ Tue, 30 Jul 2019 12:22:23 +0000 https://prosertek.comblog/world-marine-aids-navigation/ The first “World Marine Aids to Navigation Day (WAtoN-Day)” took place on 1 July last. A date chosen to commemorate, promote and publicise all the port maritime systems, devices, and services used to improve the safety and efficiency of navigation, as well as the preservation of the environment. The navigation aid harmonisation festival This event is sponsored by the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA). IALA is a non-profit international technical association founded in 1957. Its main purpose is the exchange of experiences among everyone involved in the navigation aid sector (, navigation authorities, manufacturers, consultants, scientific institutes, etc.) with the aim of harmonising these aids globally and thus making sea transport safer and more efficient, while protecting the environment. And it was Spain that put the idea of celebrating this day to IALA, and was therefore the country selected to host the central event on an international level of the first year of this event, through the coordination of State Ports. However, the different member countries of IALA were invited to create their own agenda of events, with the event therefore taking place in several countries, including Denmark, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Japan and Korea.
