Offshore wind farms expand in the United States

Wind power is taking North American ports by storm. That’s what’s inferred by the government’s historic decision to auction off five areas off the coast of California for offshore wind development. With a goal of generating 30 gigawatts of power by 2030, the decision comes on the heels of another two auctions held this year in Atlantic waters. The sale notice includes three lease areas off central California near Morro Bay, and two areas off the northern coast near Humboldt County. The areas total around 373,000 acres that could one day generate more than 4.5 gigawatts of energy and power 1.5 million homes, the Interior Department said in a statement. This project is expected to be key in helping California to achieve its goal of removing fossil fuels from its power grid by 2045. These wind projects off the coast of California will use floating turbines, an emerging technology suitable for the area, given the depth of the Pacific outer continental shelf. Prosertek is returning to one of the leading fairs in the port sector. Namely, ILTA 2022, the trade fair and conference specialised in the liquid terminals segment taking place from 13 to 15 June in Houston, Texas. Considered the largest meeting in its sector, the fair is now in its 42nd year under the organisation of the International Liquid Terminals Association (ILTA). This first post-pandemic edition of the event hopes to be attended by more than 4,500 professionals from the liquid terminal sector. Legislation on the Amendment of the Consolidated Text on State Ports and Merchant Navy Legislation and Maritime Navigation Legislation was adopted on 1 March last by the Council of Ministers. The new standard is proposed as a coherent update of the two main Spanish Maritime Legislation law with the following objectives: To better fit into the European regulatory framework To adapt to the new maritime transport needs. To provide legal security to the Spanish maritime and port sector To improve the competitiveness of ports and shipping companies. The reform will cover certain existing regulatory gaps and coordinate legislation to avoid any overlaps. For the first time, it contains regulations applicable to autonomous or unmanned vessels, which shall be governed by the general rules of navigation. Another objective of the law is to provide the tools to deal with extraordinary circumstances such as those experienced during the pandemic and to incorporate additional guarantees to prevent any possible issues for Spanish shipping companies in these cases. We are very used to seeing windmills dotted along the landscape on the mainland. However, the offshore wind farm sector is increasingly developing as a highly potential measure to meet climate goals. An offshore wind farm is simply a set of wind turbines but that are located out at sea. In this case, the kinetic energy is transported through cables buried at the bottom of the ocean towards several transformers that convert it into high voltage ready for consumption. However, offshore wind farms offer major benefits: They enhance usage. The wind moves at a higher and more constant speed due to the lack of obstacles. Fewer installation hurdles as they can be mounted on larger surfaces and use larger turbines and power. Less acoustic and visual impact. The fact that they are located so far out of sight removes any negative effect that the mills may generate on the landscape.
