Offshore platforms, engineering in the middle of the sea https://prosertek.com/blog/offshore-platforms/ Wed, 22 Aug 2018 09:00:24 +0000 https://prosertek.comblog/offshore-platforms/ We all know offshore platforms, sea terminals located in deep water so that ships can access fuel reserves in inaccessible areas. But how did these gigantic works of engineering make it to the middle of the ocean? And how do they remain standing in the midst of moving water? Let’s take a look at how an offshore platform is built, and what the different types are. Installing an offshore platform In broad strokes, manufacture begins with a steel tube skeleton, known as a jacket. This shell is transported with a barge to the desired location, and then fixed with pilings, extraordinarily long stakes driven into the seabed. Next, we must build the platform deck with all the machinery, which is transported the same way and assembled with the jacket on-site. Put like this, it sounds simple. But we’re talking about gigantic structures, with great weight and height, and operating with them is a huge challenge. What we have described is for a jacket platform, but the manufacture, assembly and floating or sinking process for an offshore platform varies depending on the kind of platform. Types of offshore platforms Fixed structures Fixed structures owe their name to the fact that they […]

The largest container ships in the world https://prosertek.com/blog/the-largest-container-ships-in-the-world/ Thu, 23 Feb 2017 10:00:00 +0000 https://prosertek.comblog/the-largest-container-ships-in-the-world/ It is named Oscar, and can store a paltry 19,224 TEU. To date, this is the largest container ship in the world. This colossus, owned by the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), shares seaways with other ships also worthy of mention, due to their huge transport capacity. These include its Olympic class brothers (MSC Oliver, MSC Zoe, MSC Sveva, MSC Maya) who also have the same load capacity. In second place, we have CSCL Globe, owned by the company China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL), that can hold up to 19,100 TEU. Along with it, we have the Globe series, owned by the same company: CSCL Pacific Ocean, CSCL Indian Ocean, CSCL Atlantic Ocean and the CSCL Arctic Ocean, with the same capacity. In third place, we have United Arab Shipping Company’s (UASC) A19 class ships with 18,800 TEU. Al Muraykh, Tihama, Al Nefud, Al Dahna, Barzan and Al Zubara are responsible for connecting the Middle East with the world, just as the company introduces its fleet. After these Top 3, we have the container ships from Danish shipping company Maersk’s triple E series, with 18,340 TEU, commissioned to the Korean company Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering. The noteworthy features highlighted by the […]

New edition of the International Maritime Equipment Medium Technician course in Cartagena de Indias https://prosertek.com/blog/international-maritime-equipment-medium-technician-course/ Wed, 15 Feb 2017 15:31:25 +0000 https://prosertek.comblog/international-maritime-equipment-medium-technician-course/ Last 7 and 9 of February, our colleague Gorka Elorrieta, Technical Director at Prosertek, gave the course on Specialisation in Maritime Equipment and its Environment, at the privileged site of Cartagena de Indias (Colombia). Gorka has plenty of experience in the industrial world and in designing, manufacturing and installing maritime equipment. He is accredited by the Instituto de Enseñanza Secundaria Náutico Pesquero de Pasaia (Secondary Nautical Fishing Teaching Institute of Pasaia, Basque Country) to teach International Maritime Equipment Technician courses. The course was opened and sponsored by COTECMAR (Science and Technology Corporation for the Development of the River and Maritime Naval Industry of Colombia) and IPIN (Pan-American Institute of Naval Engineers). This training is indispensable for those in charge of designing, manufacturing, inspecting, maintaining and operating the maritime equipment needed for port maritime activity, as well as compatibility for the ship and terminal, bearing the requirements from different regulations on maritime equipment in mind. Attendees came from different countries (Colombia, Panama, Spain, Ecuador, Chile, Argentina, etc.) who came to representing different engineering and construction companies and terminal operators: Cotecmar, IPIN Colombia, GPC Tugs-Contecar, Moffat & Nichols, Coremar, Buzca Ingeniería, Bam Internacional, Puerto de Santa Marta, Iconsa, Prdw, Intercoastal, Fundaciones, Oiltanking, CCTO-APM Terminals, […]

Seaports: how they have changed https://prosertek.com/blog/seaports-how-they-have-changed/ Thu, 19 Jan 2017 12:13:06 +0000 https://prosertek.comblog/seaports-how-they-have-changed/ As of today, the sea is the most economic global transport method, thanks to the huge capacity of new container ships, as well as technical and technological progress in the energetic efficiency of the maritime environment. Furthermore, in international trade of all types of products, it is estimated that 10% of the end price largely depends on the cost of transport. This means that sea transport is one of the preferred methods for trade, and it has been for ages. This leads us to a question: what were ancient ports like? Earliest data on the emergence of ports reference the period spanning the 10th and 5th centuries B.C., when the Phoenicians, Egyptians and Greek built the first havens in natural enclaves that provided natural protection against inclement weather. The Phoenicians (located in current-day Israel, Syria and Lebanon) were great pioneers in sailing and international trade, thanks to the new improvements they made to the industry; for example, entering deeper waters and leaving coastal shipping by the wayside, the sailing system par excellence at the time. This progress quickly spread to other peoples and generations. Vikings, Romans and more adopted the improvements made by the Phoenicians. Since then, events took place […]
