The cruise ship industry is positioning itself as a pioneer in the development of responsible practises, with a current estimated investment of over 1 billion dollars in new technologies and cleaner fuels. Encouraged by regulations, the industry is taking its environmental commitment beyond legal obligations, promoting ever-more efficient ships which, in turn, dock in port terminals with more modern equipment. Ecological sustainability is part of the cruise ship experience, and the clientele is increasingly aware of the environmental challenge we face. Passengers are demanding efficiency, and the industry is responding: today, cruise ships consume up to 70% less fuel than 20 years ago. Leading environmental technology Noteworthy innovations designed by the cruise ship industry include Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS), which reduce the level of sulphur oxides by up to 98%. Cruise ships are working to use advanced waste water treatment systems, alternative fuels, such as natural liquid gas (NLG) and gas emission reduction technologies. Another one of the keys to ship sustainability is recycling and reducing on-board generated waste as much as possible. Some cruise ships are recycling or reusing practically all of their […]

Prosertek participates in the 5th Working Group Mooring of Large Ships at Quay Walls meeting https://prosertek.com/blog/mooring-large-ships-quay-walls/ Wed, 14 Mar 2018 13:01:57 +0000 https://prosertek.comblog/mooring-large-ships-quay-walls/ With Prosertek, and the collaboration of the Port Authority of Bilbao and engineering consulting firm Siport21, the Work Group WG186 “Mooring of Large Ships at Quay Walls” ot The World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure or PIANC, held its fifth meeting in Bilbao. Over the course of two days last January, members of this work group, focused on large ships, held a series of meetings at the Ría Maritime Museum of Bilbao. To culminate the event, the Belgian port of Antwerp was proposed as headquarters for the next WG186 meeting. In addition to the meetings, members of the work group had the opportunity to visit our Abanto-Zierbena facilities, specifically the port fender business unit. In this regard, we are pleased to highlight that we have the only fender manufacturing plant in Europe. While at these facilities, the group was able to observe the process we use to make and vulcanise our fenders, designed to absorb kinetic energy from ships when interacting with a wharf, a dock or other ship. They also observed real-scale fender tests and visited our laboratories. A visit was also made to the Port of Bilbao, where Prosertek’s work on the passenger boarding bridges at the new cruise ship […]

A new offshore wind tower manufacturing plant in Bilbao https://prosertek.com/blog/offshore-wind-tower-bilbao/ Thu, 10 Aug 2017 09:02:17 +0000 https://prosertek.comblog/offshore-wind-tower-bilbao/ Construction has already begun on the wind tower manufacturing plant for offshore facilities in the port of Bilbao. It is calculated that the investment to build and start up the plant will be around 55 million euros, and it is expected to generate between 250 and 300 jobs. The complex, which will begin operations during the first quarter of 2018 under Haizea Wind, will occupy 48,800 square metres, with a large main warehouse, a services building and another attached administrative building. The plant will be able to manufacture approximately 180 offshore towers per year, or 540 lengths per year (since the standard offshore towers will be made of three lengths and production is measured in tower lengths). The large size of these parts was, indeed, the determining factor when selecting a location near the docks for their manufacture. The Port of Bilbao’s projects Under the Port Authority’s investment plan to activate start-up of logistical-industrial projects to draw traffic and create jobs, and to create resources and wealth for the zone, this initiative reinforces the expansion of the thriving Basque wind industry, as well as the establishment of the Port of Bilbao as a port specialised in projects. Bilbao is a […]

The ship that gave the starting signal for the new terminal was Britannia. With this terminal, the Port of Bilbao aims to become the point of reference for cruise ships in the north of the Iberian Peninsula. Attending the inauguration was the minister of Economic Development and Infrastructure of the Basque Government, Arantza Tapia, the President of the Port Authority of Bilbao, Asier Atutxa, and the President of Ports of State, José Llorca, and more. Prosertek at the new cruise ship terminal The maritime terminal has a cutting-edge passenger boarding bridge, manufactured by Prosertek. In addition to complying with the strictest regulations in force, this boarding bridge guarantees safe, comfortable transit for cruise ship passengers. Moreover, it has interactive information systems and finishes for a pleasant transit. The boarding bridge provides for transit along the entire dock, and has a practical operational range of over 9 m, with an 8% maximum slope over its 85 m-plus length. Features of the boarding bridge As is to be expected, the boarding bridge has active and passive safety systems to protect both the […]
