The industry is striving to boost the creation of green corridors to reduce this impact, and therefore coordinate international maritime transport towards a zero-emission horizon. This was evident in the framework of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP26), where maritime leaders expressed their commitment to work toward sustainability.  And it was there in Glasgow that the Getting to Zero Coalition was created, led by the Global Maritime Forum, the World Economic Forum, and Friends of Ocean Action to call on governments and leaders from the global maritime sector to commit themselves to the decarbonisation of international maritime transport by 2050. The coalition calls for support for zero-emission shipping projects and to legislate to favour their implementation by 2030. The signatories of the initiative come from more than 150 representatives from the entire maritime ecosystem, including large companies in the sector, such as A.P. Moller – Maersk, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), Hapag Lloyd, NYK Line, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), X-Press Feeders and leading ports such as Rotterdam, London, Antwerp and Gothenburg, as well as the Panama Canal Authority. China-US Green Corridor 22 signatories at COP26 itself […]

Two record-breaking years following the expansion of the Panama Canal https://prosertek.com/blog/two-years-expansion-panama-canal/ Thu, 12 Jul 2018 12:11:17 +0000 https://prosertek.comblog/two-years-expansion-panama-canal/ The Panama Canal has reason to celebrate. 26 June last marked two years since its expansion, a major infrastructural investment for shipping transport that has already significantly paid off in this brief period of time. The most significant upgrading project in the century-long life of this emblematic interoceanic waterway between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean has resulted in record growth across all segments. According to Jorge L. Quijano, CEO of the Panama Canal, this step has fulfilled the commitment to “mark the beginning of a new era for world trade” with which the project was undertaken, the results of which speak for themselves. Some of its most important achievements include the crossing of 3,745 neopanamax vessels to date. This term is used to describe vessels equipped to sail through the new Clear Water and Cocolí locks (in the Atlantic and Pacific, respectively). This figure is testimony to the efficiency of the route and the renewed commitment of the shipping industry in the canal. Milestones and records of the new canal The new canal has not stopped breaking records, particularly the setting of a new monthly tonnage record of 38.1 million tons (PC/UMS). It also saw the Norwegian Bliss make […]

The challenges large ships offer ports https://prosertek.com/blog/large-ships-challenges/ Thu, 23 Nov 2017 12:27:01 +0000 https://prosertek.comblog/large-ships-challenges/ In sea transport, the size of the ship does matter. The load capacity influences costs-greater capacity entails reduced costs for moving freight-, but also the infrastructures used for and by them. Let’s see how. Technological development has led shipyards to make new types of ships and others which, due to their huge container transport capacity, are considered true titans of the sea. Additionally, amplification of large infrastructures, such as the Panama Canal, means that ships that previously had not travelled from one ocean to the other, such as liquefied natural gas ships (LNG), can now pass through. In addition to other issues, the recent document issued from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) regarding Ocean Transport 2017 indicates that the worldwide trade fleet increased by 3.2%, with a load capacity of 1.86 million tonnes at the beginning of this year. This report also indicates the increased size of ships and how investment is fundamental to improve ports. They use the United States as an example. Between 2000 and 2016, it spent 68.8 million dollars in private investment on 292 projects to improve port infrastructures and superstructurs. In fact, according to the UNCTAD, private operators improve port infrastructures […]
