This is detrimental for maritime transport that evolves with the times and results in it taking measures to ensure areas such as the Gulf of Guinea and the Gulf of Aden.<\/p>\n<h2>What is piracy?<\/h2>\n<p>According to the Geneva Convention, piracy is an <strong>\u201cillegal act of violence, detention or depreciation through the use of a ship\u201d. <\/strong>An act of piracy requires 4 conditions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To be committed on the high seas.<\/li>\n<li>To involve violence.<\/li>\n<li>For the pirate ship to be civil.<\/li>\n<li>For the attack to be committed for private ends.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Piracy in East and West Africa<\/h2>\n<p>Pirates always operate in strategic areas, some out of tradition, such as the&nbsp;<strong>Strait of Malacca<\/strong> in Southeast Asia or the <strong>Caribbean<\/strong>. Today, however, <strong>the majority of the attacks<\/strong> of this type are concentrated in<strong> Africa.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>The Gulf of Guinea<\/h3>\n<p>The Gulf of Guinea covers a large portion of West Africa, although <strong>Nigeria is the main focus of its piracy<\/strong>. It is a fundamental trade route for <strong>oil tankers that are travelling to Europe and America<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>These are <strong>pirate affiliated with mafias <\/strong>that operate in territorial waters. These attacks can end up involving actions such as the <strong>destruction of cargo and ships <\/strong>or the <strong>theft of crude to refineries illegal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>The Gulf of Aden<\/h3>\n<p>The area of the Gulf of Aden is the <strong>gateway to the Red Sea and to the Suez Canal<\/strong>. It is not surprising then that this important area with a <strong>high density of maritime traffic <\/strong>has been chosen by Somali pirates to perform their activity.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, pirates are usually fishermen acting on their own and <strong>who aim to get a ransom<\/strong>. Given the chaotic situation in their country, they see piracy as the only option to get themselves out of poverty.<\/p>\n<p>Piracy involves <strong>human risk<\/strong> and <strong>economic losses<\/strong>, in addition to <strong>hikes in insurance policy costs for<\/strong> those routes for maritime transport. As a result, many transport companies<strong> have to increase the cost of their services<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Maritime transport measures against piracy<\/h2>\n<p>There are very few measures that can be taken unilaterally by shipping companies apart from having <strong>armed private security<\/strong> on board. However, this is a costly and not without its dangers.<\/p>\n<p>An international military cooperation that assists local armed forces is much more effective. One such example is Canada, which <strong><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/keeping-pirates-at-bay-on-board-with-the-canadian-navy-off-the-coast-of-nigeria-1.4590286\">sent two of their warships<\/a><\/u><\/strong><u> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/keeping-pirates-at-bay-on-board-with-the-canadian-navy-off-the-coast-of-nigeria-1.4590286\">to the Gulf of Guinea<\/a> <\/strong><\/u><strong>to train with the Nigerian Navy<\/strong> for the prevention of pirate attacks.<\/p>\n<h2>Cyberpiracy and drones<\/h2>\n<p>The arrival of new technologies has allowed pirates to be able to hack the databases of shipping companies or use drones to <strong>track vulnerable ships<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Also being used are drones <strong>with facial recognition<\/strong> or exercising surveillance in areas at risk to deal with this.
